I was wondering what the differences between the Merc 4.5L 200 vs the 4.5L 250 HP? I have a new boat with it and was wondering if you could modify it like you could with the old outboard to get to the higher HP on the same engine block.

Hope that makes sense... Monday morning thoughts are still slowly processing ;)

I have the same engine package and that thought has crossed my mind. But I have yet to find anything that shows it will work. The engine itself, internal parts all seem to be the same. I'm sure it's not as simple as an ECU/ECM swap, else others would have done that already. The only fact for sure is the max rpm is different between the two. The 200 has max of 4800 where the 250 is set at 5200. For me the 200 works great and not worried about getting more hp.
My thought is, if the engine rpm is good to 5200, well then my 4800 has a good safety factor and should help in engine life span.

I am okay with my 200 HP but the idea of more kind of sounds nice just to have. Main reason being that we normally boat a good 20-40km from the launch I go to and I've been caught in other boats in a rain storm more than I'd like. We have pop up storms that show up without warning

I'm sure given some time some one will be able to reflash the ecu and you'll have 250 hp... just curious when you bought the boat how much more was the 250 vs the 200 hp engine

Same motor

Different fuel mapping and more accrued warranty on the 250

I'm not sure I think $5k CAD but then again I bought him off the lot at a boat show. Last year's stock and got a great price on it. About $10k off when you factor in discount/difference to this model year :nono: ect.

If it was my choice I would have gone with the 250HP but I am still perfectly happy with my 200HP burns enough gas now...

Is the cam the same part number? A touch more lift and duration, and 400 more rpm, and a touch of marketing exaggeration, and there's 50 HP.
