Evinrude 140 powerhead on a 90 midsection?

Hey everyone,

I have a 1997 evinrude v4 crossflow 90 E90TSLEUA motor. The powerhead went bad on it and my friend had a 1979 v4 140 powerhead a custom had rebuilt but never paid for (140TL79R).

We successfully bolted it up and had it running for a minute or so, but I'm having issues getting it started again.

I used all of the ignition (control module, coil packs, stator, flywheel, choke solenoid, etc) from the '97 on the 140, so basically we just wanted to use the block.

The only thing we didn't swap over was the carbs.

I just wanted to do a sanity check - is there any major reason why this setup would not work?

Thanks,
Jason

You have no need to call on the Couch Doctor.
Hopefully the starting issue can be resolved easily.
Did you transfer the VRO pump to the 79? If so, continue to run premix until it is verified that the VRO is working

There may be issues with the top end fit of the splines in the crankshaft / drive shaft.-----The spline has the same number of " teeth " and all. ----The issues comes about due to different sealing arrangement. ( post 1992 I think ) of the splines to keep water out.----May not be the issue but you have to do some checking on your part.

Hey jim, neither powerhead was vro, so I'm clear on that front. I was mainly concerned about differences in the block/pistons/timing...

Good point... the older motors have a driveshaft oring that keeps water out. I greased the splines and was told this would be enough?

Does the motor turn over fast ?----Did you check the flywheel key ?----A sheared key changes the timing.----Both motors use the same design pistons , same part # too I believe. .
