tpenfield My wife is in the market for an industrial sewing machine within the next few months. A pal has an older Juki for sale but it hasn't seen the light of day for a dozen years and has rust on most of the metal. $600.00 CDN. I passed. What machine do you have? I know there is a recent thread about machines but just too much info and reviews. The old Ford vs. Chevy etc. If it's good enought for you it's good enough for her. I buy many things with this biz model and most work out well especially if I am not versed in the product and or it's purpose. She knows her stuff when it comes to her light duty machines but not the "industrial" machines. Her little machine will stich my Sunbrella boat cover so it must be a good one. For the price she paid it had better be good. Pfaff??
Consew 226R is what I have.

Excellent work Ted!!! What is the plastic that you are using for the template material?

I am using a 6 mil clear plastic. I know that you can buy template material for upholstery that is similar, but the clear plastic seems to be doing the job for less $$$.

The port side settee backrest is done . . .

This skin was a biotch  it came out to be 21 pieces total, and the left & right 'halves' did not quite line up, so it is a bit imperfect. also there are some wrinkles in the corner . . . hopefully they will ease out. However, it is done :)

On to the other backrests, which should be easier than this one.

That looks like a ton of work. Very impressive!
Maybe those wrinkles will come out when you bolt the part in place. If not, the sun will likely relax it. Vinyl shrinks over time, and that will only help that situation.

Question: what is the clear plastic that the foam gets wrapped with before the vinyl go on? Is that just to keep rain from leaking through the seams and into the foam?

Thank you . . . and to your question.

If you are talking about the clear plastic that I am using to make templates, that is one thing . . .but . . .

If you are asking about why a clear plastic is used in general between the vinyl and the foam that is another reason/explanation.

I am not using plastic between the vinyl and the foam cushion. The reason that some/many do is with tight fitting vinyl skins, it is hard to slide the skin over the foam. The plastic allows the vinyl to slide and be fitted properly.

The need to use plastic often depends on how the skin is attached and if the skin needs to 'slide' over the foam in order to get into the proper orientation, etc.

Ted, not sure how many staples you have gone thru on the interior, however I am amazed at how many staples go into a simple panel. I have over $100 in monel staples just on the side panels so far......

I bought a box of 10,000 staples. There are about 2 staples per inch of vinyl perimeter on the back sides of the cushions. So, on a simple panel, probably several hundred staples.

Update . . .

This is the rear corner backrest of the U-shape seating, having been rebuilt. It is fairly big in size, but only 13 pieces total.

these pictures are the clear plastic templates with alignment marks, etc.

I made these templates in a matter of a hour. So, it looks like these larger pieces might move along quicker than the port settee backrest, which took a couple of weeks.

Another backrest done . . .

I got another backrest done. This one went a bit quicker than the last, but I'm not sure it was any easier

This one makes up part of the sunpad in addition to being the corner backrest.

Here are a few pictures. . .

I finished the center backrest section today. I started it on Saturday, so it took 2 days + 2 evenings. . . probably 18-20 hours total to make and install the vinyl skin.

A couple more sections to go, then it is on to the helm seat.

This is the forward backrest section of the U-shaped seating. The patterns are all laid up and numbered and alignment marking.

Next step will be to cut an appropriate amount of material for each color from the rolls and then apply the foam backing (pink already has the backing).
