Alpha 1 gen 2 oil seal orientation

I’m rebuilding my upper drive using GLM parts and the vertical drive shaft oil seal ordered is part # 85022. It is a single seal that replaces the older 2 seal arrangement. My question is does it matter which end goes up? One end has a larger chamfer than the other as can be seen in the photo.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,....... Every seal I've ever seen, the spring side faces the oil,,.....

This seal has springs on both sides but there is a difference in the thickness of the walls.

Interesting. I think I would put the tougher thicker part towards water and exhaust heat. I never saw a single seal for there. Not sure it makes sense to create a part like that that only fits Alphas..... but what do I know?

Double sides lip seals have been around a while. Merc first started using them on the upper and lower crank seals on outboards, and have since migrated them to the driveshaft seal in the upper box on Alpha drives (As it's the same seal!)

Orientation is unimportant. Either way round is fine....

Thanks guys, my thoughts were to have the thicker side against the seat bottom...towards the water so you’ve lent weight to that.
