I'm having trouble removing the bolt holding the starter to the block behind the carbs. I've backed it out until it seems to be hitting the plastic cover behind the carbs, but it's still not loose enough to remove? Any tips or advice is appreciated.

The "bits" as you call them are on the back of the carbs and there is no way to remove them without removing the carbs, which I was hoping I would not have to do,

You are wrong !!----Very wrong.------The carburetors do not have to come off to remove the starter on these..-----Just a few bolts and the covers come off in front of the carburetors.

Air silencer and base removed. Thin-walled socket or perhaps a box wrench.

has it right, though, and can advise on starter repair (maybe save some $$). Come on back for more.

Helpful if you describe trouble you are having with the starting system.

Think I would go to the local hardware store and try to find a match with a slotted head -- particularly if running in salt or brackish water (36 yr. old bolt).

So did you have to remove the entire carburetor , yes or no ?----I have done this procedure countless times.----Never needed to remove the carburetors.

What is it lately with newbies asking for help and coming back with the dissing?

This is no way to ask for future help.

Slot is cut on starter housing. Bolt u are talking about. That way u only back bolt out
4-5 turns.and starter slides off.

Ah. Misunderstood, Mikey. Lot of torque with those starters, and fit is exacting for operation -- so solution seems a little risky to me. (unless I've missed your point again.) :)

They do not come with a slot in the starter lug.-----I have never felt it needed a slot to do this simple job.

Why slot it? Are these starters being removed once a day or once a week? I doubt it.

Unsolicited Opinion - Planes, Trains and Automobiles and yes, even Boats, need parts moved out of the way access some buried pieces. Just a fact of life. Also, that's where experience comes in with little tricks, but cutting up the targeted part isn't one of them.

Is not torque of bindex up and out away from 2 bolts on the side. Away from flywheel .The hole housing of starter . would have to be compromised.
