1st post here. I just purchased a 1958 Johnson sea horse, 35hp. Model RDE-19C I believe. I got the motor and the original shift controls. The guy I bought it from is looking for the electric Starter cable for me. Says he has it, but has to find it. I bought it for a whole $15.00. Yes, that's typed correctly. The motor does turn over. Pull cord is a little stiff retracting so I will replace that eventualy. My main question is, what steps should I take to wake this thing up? To my understanding, it hasn't ran in many years, so I'm sure a carb rebuild is in order, new plugs and possibly wires. Fuel lines for sure. How do I compression check it? I have a compression gauge but I've always checked my motorcycles with the engine warm. What should the reading be? And, should I put any oil in the cylinders first?

Put a small amount of ATF in the cylinders and leave it sit for a day and then check the compression.

EASY fix on the recoil starter: Remove it from the motor and submerge it in a pan of mineral spirits and pull the rope a few times, then set aside to drain awhile. The spirits will cut the old hardened grease on the spring and relubricate it at the same time.

If you use the pull start to check the compression, disable the compression relief first.

If itt has the original coils, they are guaranteed to be bad (cracked). Use a 3-bolt puller to get the flywheel off and a torque wrench to re-install it @ 60-65 ft/lbs (important)

Do what you want, but I check compression cold. How else are you going to know if you have anything worth putting time and money into without fixing it first?

Thank you guys. I deffinately want to check compression before I get too far into this motor. What psi is acceptable? If compression checks out, I'll go all in and restore this motor to useable condition.

Also easy to remove the 2 bypass covers ( side of the block ) to look at the pistons and rings.----Easy inspection to do and well worth doing.

110+ and even across both cylinders. This is cranking with the electric starter.
