Hello everybody. New member, first post.
I have a 2007 Volvo Penta GL 5.0.
just bought the boat for a killer deal. But was unable to start it. (I know, I know) to make it worse, the boat had sat for 6 years.
Well anyways the starter was out. Put a new one, bumped the key, and it turned over. Yay!
the belt flew off. Not yay.
Alternator was shot and seized.
I pulled the alternator and turned the key with out the belt.
no fuel. I slowly added fuel to the carb and was able to hear the baby run. Yay again. Big relief. Purchase justified.
So my questions are:
fuel pump part#3858261 (High or low pressure?)
Does the fuel pump prime in the ON position?
or does it not function until the run position (cranking)
I also read that I need the alternator to run in order to power the fuel pump. New one is on the way.
i have power at the fuel pump harness, when cranking, but not in the on position. I detached the fuel line to carb, cranked the engine, not fuel came out of the pump. I think the pump is shot, but don’t have the alternator installed to confirm that.
Any advice would greatly be appreciated. And now that I own a boat, you’ll see me more often. Thanks

The alternator supplies power to the pump in the run position, hope that helps.

with the boat sitting for 6 years, most likely the existing pump is simply gummed up. along with your tank, anti-siphon valve, etc.

with a carb, you would have a low pressure pump, under 7 psi

dont forget that to prime the pump, you need oil pressure and there is a signal from the start circuit.

Thanks guys. I understand the alternator takes over the pump operation. I also understand there’s a signal from the relay. My question is, does it prime in just the on position? Should I be able to hear the pump before cranking the engine? I don’t hear any priming from the on position. And I can’t hear any pump over the sound of cranking.

TpenField... I know haha. But really only paid $6000 and these are selling for low $20k’s. So I’m ok with spending a couple grand to get it right. Only $700 into parts. Almost done now. Just have the impeller and bellows left.

This is correct. Disregard any suggestions about oil pressure --- you have a Volvo --- not a MerCruiser.

Should I be able to hear the pump before cranking the engine? No, The prime thing at key on is for EFI engines only.

As Scott Danforth said. It's likely that the system is gummed up. Suggest you use a fuel tank from an outboard motor with a primer bulb. Hook that up in place of the boat tank and prime with the bulb. If the pump still don't pump, the next thing to try is to reverse the polarity of the wires at the pump (run the pump in reverse) to see if that frees it up.

Be careful, your working with gas and electricity ---- there is a real possibility to kill yourself or others.
