I would pull off the cylinder head with the thermostat cover attached -- change out the t.stat at the bottom while working on your tell-tale installation.

I would put the 90 degree outlet into the water passage at the top of the upper cylinder. Drill very carefully with the cylinder head removed. The threaded opening is for one of the screws holding the terminal block in place -- assume you don't need it as you have a rope start model.

right but in leroys ramblings he shows one being tapped in just to the left of that pre threaded hole. Could I not just drill a small hole at the bottom of the threaded hole and use it? Or is it better to have it on the thermostat side? I currently have the head and thermostat cover off as I'm waiting on replacement gaskets.

Your call. Installing in the exhaust cover would presumably leave more water in the cooling passages, so that could be something to consider.

I have to agree.-----Have seen many motors with a " pee indicator " damaged from overheat.-----Seems many folks can not understand the concept of a new impeller every 5 years !

Oh I didnt realize it wasnt really recommended? From what I've seen/heard most say to add it. I'd be fine leaving it if its not a good idea.

Water spits out with the exhaust relief on that motor.-----That was always good enuff for folks years ago.----On most motors the pee stream tells you that the water pump is working.----That water stream does NOT go through the engine to indicate proper cooling.----So it gives many folks a false sense of security !
