Hi there. Hope someone can lend an opinion. Most likely buying a late 70s double eagle. Has a Johnson 70. My grandpa always had double eagles so i have a soft spot for em.

anyways. I know my fair share about automotive mechanics but not much about marine. The fella I’m buying the boat off is saying the motor stalls or bogs down when he’s idling and going over waves. He’s a nice guy. Sent me a few videos and spent the time to
explain what he thinks going on. I’m only spending a few grand but right now money is right. So a few grand is meaningful. Just don’t want a lemon.

he’s claiming there’s a little wire that holds the choke bracket to another bracket that is missing. He sent pictures and videos. It makes sense to me just wondering what people on here would say.

I’ll add some photos of it and some photos of the boat. There’s some holes at the bottom by mounting bracket. Don’t know what those are from.

I really dont see anything missing. Except it looks like someone made a choke linkage out of wire. Those are usually a spring easy.enough to replace. Its a 75/76 model from t he way the hood looks. I would.want a compression and spark test before anything. The carbs look like they have been cleaned recently also. You already know the motor does not run correctly so I would.price it as a boat and trailer only. If you think buying a boat is expensive wait until you own it. That motor could cost you a bundle in a hurry.

Thanks for the response. Well I’d just buy a newer motor if this gives me trouble. But I kinda hope it’ll run for the season. Here’s another picture of the linkage.

he’s saying there’s a linkage missing from the red to blue bracket. And the red bracket drops to low because of it which makes the motor choke when hitting waves.

He sent a video of it starting and running and seems to run fine. He claims it runs fine. Just that one issue

I am curious In your first post it clearly does not run fine. In your other post you say it runs fine. Good luck with your purchase.

Runs fine, other than bogging down or stalling at idle in chop. Apparently.

Most folks are confused by that SPRING / wire piece.----I do not believe that spring is the issue at all.------I believe there may be other issues with this purchase.-----What is the model # of this 70 HP motor ?------And do a good inspection of the transom and floor / stringers if you can.

The three mechanics I talks to today said that spring does most definitely cause that issue. The problem is finding a replacement for that old motor is basically impossible.
