I'm working through the list of issues with this motor and it wouldn't stay in forward gear when I tried to take it out today. I disassembled the lower unit and there is definitely some wear on the clutch dog and gears.

Is the wear in the pics enough to not let it stay in forward gear above idle?
If so, are the gears in bad enough shape that I should replace those too?

Perhaps clean the oil off the parts.----It does need a new clutch dog.

The gear does look pretty sad if you get that photobucket banner out of the way. The motor does still have the detent spring and balls, doesn't it?

Sorry for the banner. Where are the detent spring and balls located?

In the center of the prop shaft. you will quickly find them if you remove the clutch dog. Heh-heh.
