This seems to be a dead end topic and after searching the forums, I can't find a clear answer at all. the below thread that was started never ended with an answer but it applies perfectly to my question. except mine is a 1988 120 and the thread below is a 89.

https://forums.iboats.com/forum/eng...-89-120-and-a-140-hp-johnson-power-difference

so my question is, does anyone know if there really are any differences other than the intermediate jet on these engines.

please, to save back and forth posts, please read through the page and 1/2 on the above thread since I have a feeling some of the replies to this will be similar and please only comment if you're certain of your answer. a lot of extensive research went in to the original post from the OP and he's got a great point, literally everything seems to be identical except for the one specific jet.

hopefully we can actually find any other differences if there are any. as you'll notice in that thread, others have had the same questions and it's been unanswered for all these years. thanks!

Despite what was posted and some of it is correct..you need the 140 carbs, intake manifold and 140 jets. The venturi bore on the 140 carbs are bigger, and it uses the 200/225 V6 intake and reeds blocks. Swap these out and your good to go

that does make more sense, although they said that the same part numbers are used for the intake from the 140 and 120 and same thing with the reeds. is that not accurate?

Service parts might indeed be different from the Originals in that these engines from the Factory had different Reeds and Intakes, but along the line, it was decided just to sell the higher HP parts as service parts. Unfortunately this has caused some cases of people determining that two Engines with the same Displacement but different HP are less different than they actually are.
