I just got a 2012 Bryant 233 with a 5.0 MPI with a little over 1000 hours on it, took it out the past few weekends and it ran great but last Sunday it started acting up while out on the water and quit running. Did some troubleshooting once we made it back to the house and had to keep digging deeper, realized it would be easier to pull the motor if I wanted to keep on digging into it so now it’s out of the boat. I told myself that if I had to pull the motor then I would upgrade to a 5.7 because I feel like the boat could use it, but I’m trying to keep it somewhat cheap and I can’t tell what all I do or don’t need. I was planning on getting a 5.7 marine longblock from Jegs but after reading through all kinds of forums I don’t know if I really need marine engine or if I could just use a truck motor. Also would the horsepower and torque upgrade be worth it going from a 5.0 to a 5.7? Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to a scan the codes on the motor. Pulling a motor before doing so is counter indicated.

And the words boat and cheap don't go together. Get over that quickly or the boat is gonna eat you alive.

The only code it had was for a throttle position sensor, replaced that and no change. After more troubleshooting I checked compression and 4 cylinders are real low. I wasn’t about to pull a motor without checking for codes first.

you need a good scan tool, and you need to know what the parameters for each sensor and the fueling are supposed to be 95% of the time there are no codes

if you pull the 5.0 to put in a 5.7, you will need to have the ECM re-flashed

difference between a truck engine and a boat engine is the core plugs, head gasket and cam. everything else bolted onto the motor (water pump, fuel system accessories, fuel system ignition, etc. is purely marine.

Hi
If you thinking of going from 5.0 mpi to 5.7 carb. There would be no point in this. The mpi 5.0 is just as powerful as the carb 5.7
if you were indeed going to go mpi to mpi. You defo need a different ecu. I’d imagine the cost of doing this would be quite high.
