How to tighten throttle 4.5HP

I use my 80s 4.5 HP for a trolling kicker. It's fairly new to me. But I've noticed the motor/throttle won't stay where you leave it. This is a cable tiller. It's especially loose in low speed/idle...just a tad higher needed but as soon as I let her go the throttle will slowly roll down.

with the engine off there is no force causing it to slowly spin. Is there any ideas or ways to tighten the throttle? As higher rpms the throttle holds but not low end.

thx

I had a '90 4 Deluxe with a device to lock the handle in place (thumbscrew tightened). If I could remember what the blasted thing was called, I would post it -- but maybe it shows up in an accessory kit for a motor in the 4 to 9.9 range.

Its a pain ........ my '84 6 hp Yachtwin suffers from the same problem .. or at least it did

If you look at the parts diagrams for mid 80s 6 & 8 hp engines you will see a "throttle friction control" .. a sort of clamp that will hold the twist grip wherever you set it ... I guess that is the same as what Oldboat is referring to.

It may be possible to fit one of these friction control clamps to your 4.5 but it will involve taking the tiller twist grip apart to fit it.

I solved the problem a different way on my 6hp, which is not applicable to your 4.5

^^That's it. Thanks, Vic. Been a while, but agree the twist grip had to come off to fit the piece.

I dont know why you cannot find it

It is #43A on this page for '84 6&8 hp models http://ww2.iboats.com/Midsection/dm/...iew_id.1546173
but don't order before checking the other parts of the twist grip are the same as those on your 4.5
