its an AQ drive shown in the video. not sure of the year, however prior to 1989 from the top cover
however it doesnt help identify WTF is on your boat. so please, identify your drive so we can help you.
assuming that your drive is a 270/280/290....
the rattling is most likely the u-joints.
since you just purchased the boat you need to do all the maintenance that the prior owner neglected for years
again, assuming your drive is a 270/280/290....
in this case, the impeller is easy, its at the front of the crank. takes 3 minutes to change if you have the tools ready
the bellows will need to be replaced
the gear oil serviced
the water inlet casting on the drive will need to be replaced
the water inlet hose between the transom shield and the drive should be replaced
when you pull the drive off, you may find a rusty mess from a leaking bellows. you may not. however prior to using the boat, you need to correct the issue
either way, time to replace the u-joints.
if you have to take the drive in to have the u-joint shaft replace, be prepared for a healthy bill.
if you want to replace the u-joints yourself, be prepared to follow the proper proceedure
- get a factory service manual (not a seloc or haynes) or at a minimum look at boatinfo.no
- you will need a method of measuring bearing pre-load torque (a few in the manual)
- get the correct parts for your drive. use the serial number on top the double-bearing box (just under the steering helmet) you can follow the iBoats link for Volvo Penta parts to take you to either the volvopentastore.com or marinepartseurope
- you will need 2 new u-joints, an input shaft seal, the sealing thrust washer, double bearing box o-ring and depending on the vintage of your drive, either a stack of shims or the crush sleeve
