SP Outdrive Rattle - U-Joints or Exhaust Flap?

I have an SP outdrive that has a rattle when running on dry land.
I have just purchased the boat and have not yet had it in the water. I have found a video on youtube that is exactly the same sound as what mine sounds like. Can you guys have a look at the video and let me know what you think it might be. The comments in the video seem to indicate that it could be u-joints or an exhaust flat which stops water from from going backwards up the exhaust.

Thanks

its an AQ drive shown in the video. not sure of the year, however prior to 1989 from the top cover

however it doesnt help identify WTF is on your boat. so please, identify your drive so we can help you.

assuming that your drive is a 270/280/290....

the rattling is most likely the u-joints.

since you just purchased the boat you need to do all the maintenance that the prior owner neglected for years

again, assuming your drive is a 270/280/290....

in this case, the impeller is easy, its at the front of the crank. takes 3 minutes to change if you have the tools ready
the bellows will need to be replaced
the gear oil serviced
the water inlet casting on the drive will need to be replaced
the water inlet hose between the transom shield and the drive should be replaced

when you pull the drive off, you may find a rusty mess from a leaking bellows. you may not. however prior to using the boat, you need to correct the issue

either way, time to replace the u-joints.

if you have to take the drive in to have the u-joint shaft replace, be prepared for a healthy bill.
if you want to replace the u-joints yourself, be prepared to follow the proper proceedure
  • get a factory service manual (not a seloc or haynes) or at a minimum look at boatinfo.no
  • you will need a method of measuring bearing pre-load torque (a few in the manual)
  • get the correct parts for your drive. use the serial number on top the double-bearing box (just under the steering helmet) you can follow the iBoats link for Volvo Penta parts to take you to either the volvopentastore.com or marinepartseurope
  • you will need 2 new u-joints, an input shaft seal, the sealing thrust washer, double bearing box o-ring and depending on the vintage of your drive, either a stack of shims or the crush sleeve

Thank you for the reply.

The tag on the outdrive says SP-A, 2.15 Ratio, P/N 854011 or 854311 and the 10 digit number is 3102066526.
I cannot use the Volvopentastore.com because I am in Canada and it says only people in the US can use it. I have tried the marinepartseurope.com site as well but cannot find how to identify the model based on the tag information.

Sorry, I am a complete newbie...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would a picture help?

your boat is either a 1989 or 1990

you have a SP-A, also known as a SP290A.

the whole drive is 854011 and your serial number is 31066526

you either have a 230 or 250 motor (4-banger)

so you have a crush sleeve vs shims between the bearings.

you will need the proper volvo penta manual to pull your drive apart to replace.
