Hi. Nowhere near enough chain. The chain is as important as the anchor...or more so. There is a general rule on length of chain to length of boat and depth of water...but I won’t bore you with it.
but I will say that I’d bet that if you got a 5kg Bruce anchor and about 20ft of chain, then rope after that...if you lay all that chain and anchor down on the bottom...it will hold you rock steady in most rivers easily.

Give me a break!!! 20 feet of chain for a 15 ft boat ,you are gonna get another BIG DUHHH .

First thing I would do is see what boats like yours are using every river is different. Here we short line in fast rough water high winds.

Google Columbia river anchor they are pretty easy to make. I dont know how fast your water is or your waves but a 15 foot tri hull in hard waves might need 25 pounds and ten foot of much heavier chain than you have if you want to short line it just know the limits of safety here boats are just big bobbers you may have to cut that thing free in a nano second if your to short which I assume is done for a reason. But I’m just guessing the anchor you using right now wont hold here on a flat day with a lot of rope out.

You have to forgive QBhoy , he's from Scotland, they have some daft ideas over there.

Chris......
;)

Would that be the same Scotland that’s responsible for just about every useful thing invented...ever 🤷‍♂️

For the guys that don’t want to lose their boat from poor anchoring techniques. The rest, need not look. You know who you are 🤦*♂️

Bearing in mind the poster asked about a river anchor set up too.

Here in Scotland we tend to air on the side of caution. Although I do most of my boating on inland fresh water...we are never far from some coastal boating in some serious environments and currents. So getting it right is crucial...otherwise my boat may end up mid Atlantic.

Had a similar problem years ago when trying to anchor at a place north (Exmouth). Didn't matter what I did, couldn't hold bottom. Ended up joining 2 lengths of chain together (had 2 anchors each with their own chain)... Solved the problem very nicely.

I currently run 5 metres of close link 10mm stainless chain, and the only problem is pulling that sucker up! It's HEAVY!

Chris....

So 5 metres...eh about 18ft....and stainless too ? And you’re giving me a hard time for 20ft of galvy chain 😂

To the mods...in all seriousness. What is the deal here. Have I wronged this guy in another life...this is the second time he has had a totally random silly attack at one of my responses. Is he getting mixed up with someone else ? Or is it quite normal for him to behave like this and everyone just puts up with it, like the old crazy elderly dog that farts in the corner of the room...but everyone pretends they can’t smell it...just because he’s old and been around a while now ?
I don’t get it. Maybe I’ve missed seeing this guy and his jokes before now ? Someone enlighten me.

Thanks

The deal is that I disagreed with your advice to a newbie. You decided to verbally personally attack me several times including profanity because I disagreed with you.Look in the mirror and you will get your enlightenment. You have a problem and this or any forum really does not need any problems.

ENOUGH! You two, knock it off, now!

I was trying to make light of the first jabs, but it appears you two didn't get it... One more attack, from either of you, will earn you a 2 week ban. You have been warned!

And I don't care who started it!
