1978 Glastron with 898 and MC-1... New boat to me and sorting through many "niggles"

When the outdrive is all the way down, the trim gauge moves to 1/3 from up.
I've adjusted the trim sender at the outdrive to it's limit. Tried adjustments to the trim limit switch but that doesn't help. I've cleaned and lubed the trim sender and it all looke fine - it functions correctly.
Am I missing something, or am I looking at buying a new gauge (Faria is currently installed)?

TIA

Those trim gauges and limit switches don't last a real long time, they may need to be replaced. If your adjusting by the manual and its not working they probably need replacing.

Can you trim full up with the throttle switch?

In most cases its the sender and not the gauge. Fine the trim sender wire inside the boat. There will be a Brown/White wire connecting to the sender. Pull the connector, turn key ON then ground the Brn/Wht wire, the gauge should peg, with it disconnected the gauge should peg the other side.

Salt water boat? I suspect internal corrosion that you cannot see. I have replaced several over the years and all were salt water exposed. I don't boat in fresh water. Fishing new gauge and limit switch wires are a pain in the butt. I have never been able to replace w/o removing bellhousing and stretching or pulling (if you can) the drive bellows down to access 1/4"x20 ss bolt. I feel your pain. If you plan on installing new ones, use multimeter to test them to be sure that they work out of box or boat before installing them. Trust me. In fact, you may want to get friend to move drive up and down after attaching multimeter and testing for resistance. Limit switch is on or off. If you do install new ones, be sure to align guide marks on switches as per instructions. And, if salt water exposed, use some sort of never seize on bolts. Good luck!

Fresh water boat.

There was zero corrosion inside the sender.

I'll try Dodge's test to see if the gauge will swing fully swing both ways.

If it's the sender, I'll probably just live with it until the drive comes off for something else...

Thx for the tips

There should be quick wire disconnects near inner transom plate for trim sender and limit switches. Attach multi-meter ohm selector to leads while raising or lowering OD. You should get consistent readings. If not, sender is defective. If fact, I believe that there are values in a manual somewhere that I read years ago. You may want to do a web search to find them. Good luck!
