Installing 4.3 Alpha one outboard. Stopping 3/4" from flush.

I am installing my outboard after reseal. When I go to put it onto the housing It keeps stopping 3/4" from flush. Being this far on I do not think it is the splines stopping it but I cannot figure out why it wont go on any further. I have the shifter in fwd however I am having a really hard time making the lever arm with the roller stay in between the pawls on the shifter piece. I think what may be happening is that the shifter arm is falling out of the moving piece and it is jamming and stopping me from installing the outboard any further. Is there anything I can do to make the arm stay inside the pawls where it is supposed to be? The last time I tried last night I ripped the gasket so we are going to be waiting until the new gasket comes in to try again.

Side question, the big o ring that I am replacing that goes around the U joints. Am I supposed to be putting that into the outdrive housing where the stop for it is or am I supposed to be put it onto the outdrive itself?

A lot of grease around the o-rings on the driveshaft can make it hard going on

Alignment is very good. I have an alignment tool and I can spin it very freely when fully installed. You mean the o rings on the actual driveshaft itself? They have some grease on them but they arent like packed. Should I have to use a rubber hammer to push past those o rings?

You may be able to get the tool in and spin it, but you need to cover the end of the tool where it goes into the coupler with grease and look at the spline marks when you pull it back out. You need even spline marks the whole way around the end.

Also if you have to use force to put it on something is not right and you will likely break something

The rubber gasket MUST be glued into the bell housing before you even think about installing the drive.

I've found that if you've put a lot of grease in the coupler by repeated using the alignment tool it can be tough to get it in the coupler as there is no where for the grease to go.

Hard to tell if its that or the oring that fits in the gimbal bearing but might try GENTLY using a 3/8 drive ratchet to snug it up assuming you have verified the shift linkage is engaged properly.

I may give that a try. Hydraulic lock in the coupler would make sense. Are the only things I need to worry about lining up once im splined in the shifter and the gasket and water passage o-ring?

I will make sure to glue it. What is that feature in between the top right two studs on the housing? I do not have that on mine.

call a dribble valve use with the plastic res bottle . Did you have difficulty removing the drive? control box in fwd, drive in fwd? DO NOT PULL ON WITH THE STUDS

Came off super easily. Did not hang up whatsoever. Both control box and drive are in forward. I am pretty sure now after trolling around on here and watching a few videos my shifter arm was not positioned correctly. Getting a new gasket at NAPA today and will try again.
