1972 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Fuel Tank Question

Hey all,

I’m having some trouble finding the proper tank for this outboard. Does it run off a pressurized tank? My 62 Fisherman 5.5 uses a PT. My other question would be - can I utilize my pressurized tank and just turn the fuel cap 1/4 turn to act as a vent?

I rebuilt the carb on the Sportwin and it starts on the first pull. Idles beautifully. But under any kind of load it sputters and dies. I suspected the fuel pump so I have one coming. Just curious if my tank setup could be contributing to the issue.

Thanks!

Well---What is the model # of your 62 Fisherman ??--1959 was the last year for pressure tanks from the factory !!!----Tanks for a 1972 model Evinrude should be available everywhere.----Did you operate the manual pump to see if it was a motor fuel pump problem ??-----Perhaps money is not a problem for you but I repair fuel pumps with a $5.00 diaphragm.

Hey racer. Yeah I read the same somewhere when I was looking for info. My 62 runs terrific with the pressurized tank. Just curious if the pressurized tank will work with the 72 sport win - or if I’ll need to get a regular vented tank for it. I want to make sure I’m not creating issues by using the PT on the 72.

As for the fuel pump I took it apart and it’s missing the spring. So I just bought a new pump. Non oem but it wasn’t more than $10. If nothing else I can rob parts from it.

Gotcha. Sorry if I’m asking stupid questions. I’m a newb with outboards. When I bought the 62 it came with two of the Evinrude Cruise-a-day tanks. These are pressurized aren’t they? Single fuel line. My 62 fisherman doesn’t run nearly as well when I crack the cap 1/4 back and it depressurizes. I want to test the 72 out a bit before I throw more $$$ at it (including the cost of a new tank). So can I keep the cap cracked while I do water tank tests with it?

Or should I bite the bullet and just buy a new tank? Haha. Thanks again for the help.

* edit. Now that I’m looking at it - yeah it only has one fuel line. But the connector on the tank looks to be setup for 2? Picture attached.

A single line / hose on a 1962 tank is NOT A PRESSURE tank.-----The fisherman does have a pump on the side of the block , yes-------What with the ---haha---comment ?-----A pressure tank uses a 2 line hose.----one part of the hose for fuel to the motor.---The other part uses crankcase compression the keep pressure on the fuel and therefor no pump is needed when engine is running.

Laughing at myself for asking what I’m guessing are stupid questions.

So to wrap this up - this tank is fine to use with both my outboards?

turtles don't use pressure tanks… if you have a pressure tank it is not being "pressurized" buy the motor….

. so if it is rigged up with a single hose the sun is the source of pressure so just open the fuel tank cap.

if you use the tank with an oldy close the fuel cap .

single line tanks can not be used with an oldy two line hose

The tank in the picture should vent when hose is attached.------If it is pressurized when motor is running there is a problem with the wee vent valve !
