Boat: 1999 Chaparral 205 LE
Engine: 1999 Mercruiser 4.3L Carbureted, Thunderbolt igniton, Alpha one outdrive

Background: Purchased boat this year, I am 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] owner. When I purchased the boat, It started fine on muffs in driveway and everything seemed to run fine. I purchased it in April and first time trying to launch it and start it, I flooded it. I had mechanic look over and he replaced spark plugs. Boat started up very easily and performed great for over 15+ hours.

Problem now: The past few times taking the boat out, boat starts up very easily. Once running, there seems to be a decent amount of darker, black-ish type smoke. There is also a black sheen on the water and smells of very rich fuel. Returning to idle, it wants to idle around 400 rpm and seems like it wants to die. Boat seems sluggish through about 700-900 rpm. Once I get the boat moving around at 1000ish rpm and slowing driving around for about 10-15 mins, smoke and black sheen starts to dissipate. At that point, returning throttle to idle, it idles around 750-800 rpm (which I believe is normal) and does not want to die. The boat will accelerate and perform perfectly for the rest of the day. I can turn it off and back on without any smoke for the rest of the day. If I decide to camp out and sleep on the boat, the next morning, it will start flawlessly. This problem only happens after the boat has sat on trailer for a few days.

1. spark plugs are new this season
2. impellor is new in 2016
3. boat did not want to go into idle once throttle was in idle detent, therefore, was adjusted by mechanic and goes into idle just fine now.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

first, welcome aboard

Second, assume you mean 4.3 liter there are no marine 4.6 liters that exist

you have an issue with your fuel system. since you dont state what you have (Carb or EFI), please do.

also post your serial number, as that will help.

Edited: corrected 4.6L to 4.3L (oops, typo!) and Carb engine.

Was able to check "Transom serial no" (on outdrive): 0L537826. If there is a different serial number in engine, I will have to check later, since the boat is covered due to storms and pouring rain currently in Michigan.

I did notice this morning when I took the flame arrestor off and looked at choke, that the choke was wide open (vertical). If that helps at all. I haven't been able to look at boat since original message due to the rain.
