Hey guys,

I pulled the lower unit to inspect the impeller. Everything looked good so I reassembled. Took it out today and I can’t get it to go into forward gear. Reverse works just fine.

Shift linkage is connected. I made a slight adjustment up top as well. When I flip into reverse you can feel it engage. Hand spinning the prop in reverse and it has the proper resistance. In forward the prop free spins - though it is making a bit more noise than it does in neutral.

Also possibly related I checked the gear lube (I just put new in a week ago) and it looked like chocolate milk.

Appreciate the help!

Sounds like you haven't got the shift linkage hooked up correctly. I'm not there so I can't tell you what.

Hey,

I’m a bit of an outboard newbie but it seems like a pretty straightforward setup.

Not sure what I could be doing wrong.

Is the coupler on the shift rod put together correctly ??

Morning. Yep it is. I’ve taken out then reinstalled the lower unit about 10 times now. Even pulled the impeller late last night to see if I goofed on something there. I pulled the driveshaft out of the lower unit and the splines look fine on the end. Is there any way to mess up installing the driveshaft? Again seems pretty basic but I’m lost at this point.

Notches on the shift rods MUST be lined up with the holes in connecter before screws are put in.----And there is an adjustment under the hood for shifting.----Or the clutch dog and forward gear are now damaged.-----Perhaps inspect.

Morning racer. I only removed the bottom bolt on the connector to drop the lower unit. I had no issues with the shift linkage prior to removing the impeller. Also adjusted the linkage under the hood but it just feels like it won’t go into drive. Putting it in reverse you can definitely tell it drops into gear.

Is there a specific way the drive shaft needs to go back in? I didn’t see any indicators on it.

Per your suggestion I’ll take a look at the gearbox tonight. Thanks

The driveshaft just slides back in and nothing special to do there.-----The driveshaft would have nothing to do with your shifting issues.
