Aftermarket Parts

Guys while putting together a parts/price list for engine rebuild I see aftermarket parts are about 1/3 of the price. For example OMC piston needle bearings are 59$. Sierra aftermarket are 8$. I don’t really understand the huge difference. Is it ok to use aftermarket?

Building a parts warehouse / stocking the building / paying for the parts / retrieving the parts / shipping the parts is a HUGE , BIG money operation.----Most folks can not grasp it.-------So yes an outfit that stocks just the often sold , fast moving parts can sell you parts for much less.

Ok thanks. Just wanted ask before I build this motor & use aftermarket parts. It would be nice to save a few hundred, but I want to do it right.

Two years ago, I purchased an after market fuel pump for my 6 H.P. 'Rude for about $9.00. I ended up replacing it with a fuel pump made for my motor by the manufacturer last year for about $24.00. It worked a lot better for me. Last year, I rebuilt my carb with an after market carb kit. I could not get the motor to troll. I took the carb off again, cleaned it real good, and used the same after market parts to put it back together. Same results, no trolling. This year, I bought a rebuilt kit for around $40.00. Rebuilt the carb & the motor runs like new.

I learned a lesson about the after market parts. No more of them for me.
EDIT: At times, you may have to get aftermarket parts because the actual parts by the manufacturer are no longer available.

OMC doesn't make stuff like needle bearings. They buy them from a bearing supplier of their choice and approval. Same with aftermarket such as Sierra. They don't make any of their stuff, but buy it all, probably from lowest bidder. Some is good, some, well---you know.

Could I get some of the experienced engine builders on here to chime in and give me their opinion. I do understand somethings you don’t want to cheap out on but I am mainly referring to bearings and gaskets

Personally, I prefer OEM. You know what you are getting. Otherwise, you pays your money and you takes your chances. (Who said that?)

Since it lost a ring locating pin just get the WSM rebuild kit has all you need. Note ALL pistons need replaced not just damaged one..

Yes since they all have to go 30 over all pistons will be replaced. I have to have one cylinder Resleeved what do I do with that cylinder regarding bore size. Does it stay standard or do I also bore it? I assume the machine shop will know how to handle all this i’m asking because I don’t know.

I have been able to find 95% of these OEM parts on line as NOS is there anything wrong with purchasing those?

Sometimes that's the only way you will purchase some of the original equipment parts is NOS. That usually indicates they are not readily available all over the market, and will be marked as NLA (no long available) instead of NOS probably soon.. I bought OEM - NOS parts in the past & had no problems with any of them.

Yeah that what I thought. Sitting on shelf not gonna hurt them as long as they not rusted.

Anytime you loos a pin due to migration the other pistons will soon follow...you replace em all even if only one is damaged. The WSM kit is the best kit on market and pistons are better than Sezicos in my opinion. Been using em for yearrrrs and only had 1 problem. I'll guess/bet there are 150 motors in last 3 yrs running out there with their kits I used

Cause: The cause of dowel pin migration in these cases is not a defective piston, but a lack of water (coolant) in particular areas of the block, resulting in elevated temperatures in the cylinder/ piston.
