I have a 1998 merc 3.0 motor and 2 days ago it didn’t want to start, smells like it’s flooding. Cranks fine and when it finally does start it spits and sputters for a a minute before clearing up. Yesterday it wouldn’t start at all. Got it to fire for a minute but then cut out. There was a lot of film on the water right after it did start for a minute. After that it wouldn’t fire again. Where should I start?

BONDO- I had the carb rebuilt at the beginning of the season and it actually did this about a month ago a few times but then was fine. I guess the more direct question is how does the auto choke work? Familiar with carbs but not the auto choke?

Ayuh,..... A carb rebuild is only good til the next time ya pump crappy gas into it,.....
Did it run right after the rebuild,..??

The auto-choke is set on a cold motor by cyclin' the throttle to Wot, once,.....
It pulls off, either by a hot air choke stove, or by an electric heat element, automatically,....

Good point on the gas, I do drive like 45 minutes to get ethanol free 93 (where I live in mass they don’t have it). It has run great all summer after the rebuild, this did happen 1 day maybe a month ago but was fine after that. Once in a while it will puff out some dark smoke when it starts which makes me think it was getting too much fuel.
