I have a 1972 mercruiser 3.0 140, serial # 3436899. It has a carter fuel pump with the filter on top. The casting is stamped Carter on one side, and "blob of metal" - 735 in an oval. It may be a MO-735. I do not believe it is a marine fuel pump as it has a vent hole and no fitting to plumb anything into the carb to indicate diaphragm failure. The pump has recently begun leaking, fortunately I found this while doing a test run in the driveway on muffs. I believe the proper replacement would be a carter M60032 or a sierra 18-7278. I do not wish to rebuild the original even if it was possible as I really don't want fuel in my bilge. If possible, I would like to replace it with a filter facing down style, but I have not run across one that seems to have the proper shaped tang that rides on the engine cam. Hoping to get some confirmation here that I am about to buy the right replacement or not, or if there is an alternative that I'm not aware of. Thanks for any guidance!

Thanks for the verification! The sierra part I listed is their version of 86234A05. I'll pick one up and get her back on the water.
