I've been trying to set my 60hp 1984 e60elcre ignition timing for the first time using joe Reeves method the only thing I might be confused about is using the light I purchased a dial one from harbor freight manual says 21 so I minus 4 and I set my dial to 17 and want to see btdc as I crank it over? I've done this and when I try to start the engine with lever up my idles rev really high but with lever down it idles fine I also feel like my screw is way too far in any help is appreciated

the idle lever can over rev engine , so only move it as far as necessary, careful when not in water and in gear, high rpm's should be avoided , say under 2500, engine warm up under 2000 which screw idle or spark advance ?

One of the features of these ignition systems is that the timing does not change for the life of the motor !!-----Not sure why folks insist on adjusting these things.----Often leads to more trouble.------A sheared flywheel key does change the timing instantly.-----You can not find a sheared key with a timing light.

Ok I went and bought a new timing light from AutoZone with no dial and adjusted it she runs perfect now never going to trust a harbor freight tool for calibration
