I just started restoring a 15 foot tri hull. Looking for a replacement, original style, top and bow canvas. I’ve looked on the Internet and cannot find a source. Any suggestions? Attached is a picture of the boat for reference. Thanks

First, Welcome aboard

Second, since your tri-hull is close to 50 years old, your best bet for a convertible top is to go to your local canvas shop that also makes the frame-rails and have it made.

to be honest, of the last 4 boats I have owned, 3 of them had the convertible top, only used that feature twice over 35 years. on my current boat where I am finishing the restoration, the convertible top was removed, all the mounting brackets and snaps removed. doubt I ever will put it back on.

Those are called "Navy Tops". It will need to be custom, I would think.

How about getting a Bimini Top? It protects from the sun and will be aftermarket and a whole lot cheaper.

Thank you both For responding and great advice! The boat has the rails mounted on the gunnel so finding a Bimini top would work. Price is always a consideration too. Thanks again. Cheers!

Hawaiibret, thanks for the post, Ive looked for that top a few times but haven't found it yet. My boat is very similar. 16' tri-hull. I have a 2-bow frame that came with it and the snaps on the wind shield and gunnel. I'm hoping I can get my wife to help me make the cover for it over the winter. At the very least come up with a bimini type shade.

guys, remember the convertible tops that were all the rage between 35 and 50 years ago when your tri-hulls were new fell out of favor in the mid 80's if you want one of those tops re-created, you need to go to a canvas shop.

you wont find a surviving top that fits because the vinyl or canvas will have shrunk and rotted over the past 35 years

you wont find new tops because boats after about 1985 generally dont have them. boats in the late 80's started getting bimini tops or full camper canvas. no one carries convertible tops in stock. you can still custom order them.

the convertible tops went out of favor for the bimini

the downside to the convertible top, since they attach to the windscreen, they are short. you have to stoop and crawl to the cockpit seats, or at least waddle like a 4 year old impersonating a penquin

they are claustrophobic and in hot weather, they are like a sauna. especially if you have the windows zippered in.

the up-side, they are period correct and have a "sporty" look, but are about as practical as a sieve for bailing

the bimini top is about 2-3 feet taller than the wind screens, which provided shade, and provide air circulation. however in a rain storm, you are going to get wet.

then for the rain, enter in the full camper canvas. however you see this on larger cruisers with air conditioning (back to the sauna thing)

Thanks Scott. I wouldn't have know about all those drawbacks. I guess I had it in my mind that i was only looking for some shade while fishing/napping, not necessarily a half cab. Ill keep all those points in mind when I start to build mine. I already have the bows, so I only need to make the fabric part. Going cheap on the first iteration, till i realize how bad it is. Like you said. Maybe I can recreate my 2-bow frame to be taller, with some 3/4" or 1" conduit.

you would be better off getting the correct bimini top tubing. conduit is like pipe sizes.
