Boat has (5) year old batteries - (2) of them. The boat has been sluggish starting when not used after 3-5 days or more. I've read upon a few things it could be the batteries.

After (5) years, I feel I should replace the batteries either way. What is a really good, proven brand and spec for my needs (its mainly for starting and minimal peripheral usages).

Thx

Don't assume they need replaced due to age.

Load tested my 2011 date coded batteries yesterday. Both passed with flying colors......

One is an Interstate SMR-27. The other is an Everstart (Walmart) DC27

Those Duracell are $$$.

And, I agree about NOT replacing something that is still good. I have never tested a battery for load etc.

Have you checked your battery cables for tightness and corrosion? Have you checked to see if your charging system is fully charging the batteries? Do you have a battery disconnect switch that you use to disable the batteries when not using the boat? Have you made sure you don't have some kind of parasitic load like a stereo drawing power even when the boat is not being used?
There's only about 3 companies making batteries: Deka, Johnson Controls, and Exide. Pretty much any battery you buy anywhere with any label on it was made by one of the big companies. I've installed hundreds of Deka batteries in off grid solar systems over the years. I've had very good results.

Worth running a trickle charger on them for a few weeks. I have a 1.6A charger that is mounted on the wall in my shed, right next to the boat. Where ever I get back from a trip, the charger gets hooked up to the batteries, and they are both over 6 years old now, and still in great shape.

Deka is a brand of East Penn Mfg.

Exide went bankrupt and was sold at auction to a holding company last month.

best batteries on the planet are made by enersys. a really good manufacturer t is East Penn.

Johnson Controls is close to the chinesium batteries.

here is a list of battery manufactures and brands (this is a non-paid site and there are no ads saying who is better. its just the current list of who is who)
