Hello! I've just aquired 5 old boat motors that belonged to my uncle and late grandfather. The first one I'd like to tackle is the '53 Johnson 10HP QD-14. I've never worked on a boat motor before and I'm not finding much at all pertaining to this particular model year on the internet. I've been reading that a good start is to do the carburetor? I did remove the shroud (well half of it as the other half is blocked by a dial) and pulled out a large mouse nest already. What is the best way to procede? Where would I find a carburetor rebuild kit?

Thank you in advance!

??----Well----I would leave the carburetor to be the last item to do !!------Post the compression test numbers.-----Remove the wee bypass covers on side of the block to look at pistons and rings.---Check for slop in wrist pin bushing.-------Pull lower unit apart and inspect gears.-------Pull flywheel and inspect / service the wonderful and simple magneto.----Test spark as it is capable of jumping a gap of 1/4" or more.-------If all that proves you have a good motor then inspect the carburetor !

Mouse nest??? Those disgusting critters can cause unbelievable damage. Start with a pressure wash and see what's left. Maybe junk.

Those mice like to chew on wires for sure. I'd be surprised if they didn't chew all your wiring up.
