I'm putting a new long block in my boat, and before it gets here I've been checking over all the other engine parts that I'll be keeping, the drive, gimbal, etc.

When I was tearing it down I took note that there was no thermostat in it at all which was odd, so obviously I've been working on putting one in. I'm having trouble getting the right one though, apparently. I thought I had it but the thermostat does not sit down inside the housing, just on top, so that leads me to believe I've gotten the wrong one...also, there seems to be a brass sleeve in this housing and i thought i had to have a plastic sleeve. The brass isn't going to come out without a fight, so can I just leave it? And hopefully you gentlemen can point me towards the correct thermostat kit

Sorry I'm having trouble getting my pictures uploaded...working on it.
The thermostat housing is 16413-C, and the kit i got is 807252Q 4

the brass sleeve has to come out to put the thermostat in the housing. you most liekely will destroy it if its stuck. so buy a new one,

That's the same kit I used. I was able to get the sleeve out (and you need to). My engine was an '89. I assume yours is identical since you didn't say.

Yes mine would be the same as yours. Mine is a 90. So, I get that sleeve out and install the thermostat with no sleeve at all?

Also Stang mentioned that the one he posted was backwards. So do I install it with the spring side up, pointing away from the intake?
My housing doesn't have the nylon balls like that one does either.

You need the sleeve and it sounds like all the a1g1 drives need the check balls.

Ok, so, this makes me look pretty dumb but I figured it out lol.
I never took the hoses off of the housing, so they were still over the check balls. I do have them 🙄🙄

So, about this sleeve. If there's any sleeve in there it doesn't seem like there's any room for the thermostat is my problem. It sits right on top of the brass sleeve. Unless the plastic sleeve (which is in the mail, by the way) is much, much thinner?

Ok ok...i understand. Excuse me, huge rookie...
The thermostat doesnt fit in the sleeve, the sleeve holds the thermostat down...

So, last thing...spring pointing up or down?
