Just beginning the restoration of this baby. I wanted to post this up because I know I had a hard time finding info on this boat. If you have some insight on this boat or motor please post. All engine stamps were removed so I am unsure if this is a 185hp or higher.

1978 Reinell 24ft Cubby Cabin
Engine: Chevy 305
Outdrive: Mech. shift OMC 800

This boat was sitting for 20 years...yeah 20 years.
Motor started up like a champ

Issues:

Motor was seized - Added Marvel mystery oil to cylinders and sat for 5 days. Could not turn over by hand so took off belt and used starter to slowly turn over engine little by little until it unstuck.

Oil filter blowing the gasket - Stuck pressure valve in oil pump. I didn’t want to pull motor so I used Seafoam high mileage for engine oil. I put this in the dip stick, valve covers, and i mixed it with oil and poured it into the oil filter itself. After blowing the gasket 5 times it finally unstuck.

Current work:
Rebuilding the OMC 800 upper gearbox. The water pump housing cracked and the threads are all stripped.

Welcome to iboats

Probably best to start a topic about motor woes/repairs over in the OMC motor forum and discuss engine work there.

Keep this topic running w details of the boat rehab.

Good luck w your project

welcome aboard.

you will most likely find rot in the transom and stringers. at that point, I would seriously look at changing to a different drive and motor than the obsolete OMC stuff.

Drtrey,
Hows progress??
I am working on a sister boat to your Reinell. My project is a 24’ Cuddy. Same hull I assume but you have more cabin ...
I am removing the 72gallon fuel tank and increasing the area for engine space ....
As the other comment on dry rot is right on... check the black poly drain tubes..@ 1/2” that enter the engine bilge on each side... mine where glassed over and not open To the chime cavity it is meant to drain... once soft deck section are replaced I will add an inspection cover over uphill end of drains
Check out Reinell’s patent online to see details of hull foam I-beams in the deck..
Also old Reinell brochure is available online
Would like to talk to some old yard hand from Marysville, wa on some Reinell questions
Good luck
