1970 60073D shutdown

Gday all
Finally got the 60hp all up and running, rebuilt gearbox,all working fine.
Had problems with the electric shift switch so replaced with two toggle switches,
All great.
Got out on the water running beautiful got up to full speed for about 2 minutes then it just shut down.
Engine was warm but i could hold my hand on the head etc ,,pulled cowl off then tried starting again and after three short attempts it fired back up and ran great again but I only ran it at half throttle for 15 minutes,
Then put back on the trailer.
There is no tell tale on this engine can i create one???

So, did you pull the flywheel and service the ignition?

Hey mate
Thats the only section i haven't touched,
All the wiring is excellent condition and all ohms tested.

Its also an electronic ignition

Yeah, it's electronic ignition----with breaker points to trigger it. Set points 0.009-0.010, very specific. It also has a silver reverse cut-out ring in there to prevent the engine from running backwards. And yes it can run backwards.

Point is the ring is lubricated very sparingly with EP grease. If not lubricated, it wears into silver dust and the dust settles over everything.

And--the wires will arc out at the distributor cap towers. What I'm saying is that "electronic ignition" is not maintenance-free ignition.

Any ideas on a tell tale water outlet or just leave it coming out of exhaust area

Tell tales are for " dummies "------Install a new impeller every 5 years !!-----Test your overheat light.----Better yet install an overheat warning horn and test it every year..

Everything in the bottom end is new so that shouldn't be an issue.
Can this engine just stop from over heating and then start again 2min later?

If it stops from overheating at full speed, you will know it. It will be sitting there smoking while it burns all the paint off it. And likely be ready for lots of $$$$ or a trip to the scrap pile.

I had one of the electric switch motors. My switches went and I was going to use toggle bolts on it. When someone pointed out the fact that if I were to hit the toggle bolt to throw it into reverse unexpectantly with my arm or something while going full speed ahead, it could kill me. I changed my mind about the toggle switches and searched until I found a used set of the proper switches that could not be operated until the throttle was all the way down into idle speed. I would think twice about those toggle switches.

Ive encased them in a box with a sprung small lid so basically you have to have your hand on the switches whilst holding lid up with your thumb.
Still risky tho ,,,i do understand this and very cautious.
Will search for another switch
