Fiberglass over painted deck?

I have a 94 Maxum and pulled the old carpet up and most of the deck floor was in good shape. However, there are areas that looks worn and can see the grain of the wood. I did gel-coat the floor and it looks better, but still can see the wood grain and don't want leaks in the future. Can I use resin, epoxy or can I fiberglass over the painted surface?

Your sending a mixed message did you gel coat it or paint. Do not fiberglass over paint. It will pull the paint right up. 80 grit through the paint so the glass can get a goot adhesion to the wood/underlying glass. Which ever it is.

your 1994 maxum should have about 1/8" or more of fiberglass over the wood core with gel coat under the carpet.

the carpet should have been glued in with contact adhesive.

so.... need pics of what you are dealing with. if you have wood directly under the carpet. someone else was in there before you were.

again. need pics.

as Chev pointed out. you cant just glass over paint. you need to grind a bit first. however post pics.

Due to the light, this is the best I could do. I used a product last year called Total Boat Polyurethane (Total Tread). I am not installing carpet back on the deck, but rather wanting to make sure these areas don't leak. This area is all around the ski storage in the center.

Bad gelcoat and or paint. Bummer but to protect it if it is really even salvagable needs sanded to wood. My thoughts are it's gots ta go. Looks like ply delamination is occurring. Nice boat! I hope we can help you out.
Scott has great fixin abilities so look forward to his reply. :]

I would pull the trim around the ski locker and look for evidence of a deck-over (where a few sheets of wood are screwed over your original deck that was rotten.)

Will do, thanks for your quick response. So I will sand this area down, utilize 1708 with West System Epoxy...this is what I used last year replacing a soft spot in the rear. What is a good deck paint to finish off with?
