Hello everyone! I'm such a newbie to boating! I bought an old POS pontoon boat and completely rebuilt the deck, furniture, and helm. It came with a Mercury mounted on it in addition to an '89 Evinrude 90 (E90TLCEM). I installed the Evinrude shortly after getting the boat. The Evinrude came with an OMC throttle controller. I also had to get a new tach and after reading up on the Evinrude I've got, I bought a Faria systems check tach as suggested. The problem is that coming off the back of the throttle controller I've got the wiring assembly going to the instrument panel that has the black, purple, and gray wires. On the back of the Faria tach, it takes an 8-pin Deutsch connector I believe. It seems like the systems check engine info would be getting to the throttle controller via the big rubber 8-pin plug, but from there, I don't understand how it gets to the tach.

My question to you all would be, is there a way to adapt my 3-wires off the controller to the 8-pin Deutsch to make this Faria tach work? Do you think I have to get a basic Faria tach instead? Would it be ok to run this Evinrude without the systems check alarms and all by using a simple tach?

Thanks everyone in advance for your help! I really need to get this boat going for springtime on Lake Powell so my wife will get off my back!

I’m pretty sure your motor doesn’t support (too old) the functionality of the system check tach.

Ok, thanks "dingbat". I bought the systems check tach after finding a Johnson/Evinrude chart that strongly suggested it for my '89 motor. It'd be a lot simpler if I don't need it though. All I'd have to do is sell the tach I got and go pick up another one.

I was under the impression that system check was a mid to late 1990’s addition but I see the sell a 176709 adapter kit.

Appears to be a new wiring harness and oil level sensor for the oil tank. Requires a 4 wire OMS full pump as well

So, do you guys think I’m good to go with a basic tach (non-systems check)? I’m deleting the oil tank anyhow.
