I bought a used very clean 1993 Merc 9.9 for my jon boat. The word from the buyer was it didn't have more than 25 hours on it but it had sat for about 1 1/2 years. It did look like it was very clean throughout. It was started before I took it home and idled fine. First time out, I started it at my house before putting it in the water (to make sure it was running ok)and it fired right up 2nd pull and ran nicely. I let it idle for about 5 - 10 minutes to watch it pee. I cut it off and when I got to the ramp, I had to pull on it about 7-10 times and it did finally start (but it didn't want to). Once running, it idled like it should. It ran awesome and without spit or sputter. I ran it about 30 minutes just seeing how it ran and how well it would push the boat. It was strong and ran very well. I slowed down and began to stopped and the motor quietly stalled out. I did not smell gas like it had flooded but I pulled that rope 8-10 times and it was a no go. Knowing my trolling motor could get me back, I started to fish and troll around. After a couple hours, it was getting dark so for kicks and grins, I tried starting the Merc and it fired right off 2nd pull and off I went. Again, it ran awesome and when I got to the dock, slowed down and it cut off again. No start again. No gas smell like it had flooded out. I was told that it could be a power pack not performing properly and not sending enough voltage(?) after the engine got hot to the plugs on slowing down to allow it to fire properly. After the engine cools down it functions properly. It has done this on 2 outings with me . I was also told that if I pulled the plugs after it would not start and pull the rope, check the spark at the plug for color. If I got a blue spark, all is ok and look somewhere else for the problem. If it was a yellow spark, that would tell me that it would be a power pack not sending enough "firepower" to the plugs. I would like to get this thing fixed so I could move on without worry. Any help will be appreciated. Chris

Fact-----You test spark with a SPARK TEST device.----Forces the ignition system to produce maximum voltage up to 40,000 volts.-----It will have a gap of 3/8"-----The only way to test spark on a motor like yours.----And when you buy a near 30 year old motor you need to install a new water pump impeller.
