1995 Searay Sundancer 300
HID: SERT7493A595
Serial: 0f490921 (as far as I can tell)
1995 Merc MIE 5.7 Litre

Onset: Was running at high rpm for a few minutes, boat would not plane.

The engine shut off and smoke came from engine compartment. No audible changes in the engine except the loss of power. Engine appears to have lost about a quart of oil into the bilge.

I have not attempted to restart the engine. Should I?
Has anyone had this similar problem?
I'm looking for help identifying possible causes and solutions.

Thanks in advance!

Not enough motor for the 30 foot boat

The last one I worked on with that symptom had holed a piston ,had severe detonation, and blew the oil out the dipstick and pvc fitting

Yes, oil level is still within threshold. I’m investigating further.

Heh, well first time encountering burnt transmission fluid. It’s not oil in the bilge, it’s transmission fluid.

smoke and high RPM's indicate the coupler is toast.

you have been pulling the drive every year and checking alignment?
