I need help, to identify which is the number one cylinder, I have read that the front of the engine, faces the transom, and the firing order is 1-3-4-2, which would make number one cylinder near the transom, and the flywheel mounted on the front of the engine, this is very perplexing. Any help is appreciated. This Renault 90 engine, is in a 1971 Ranger bass boat.

You'll have to find a set of OEM service manuals. Ones printed in the 80's would still have the Renault stuff in them. The manual you need goes back to '64 IIRC..

Very few people even know they existed anymore, and very few parts exist if at all

I agree, it has been very challenging, and frustrating, but that is the way it goes, with restoring antiques. Thanks, for the input.
