I have a 55hp Johnson Enforcer with the dura-jet lower unit. Everyone tells me it is the same as a regular Johnson 55hp--it does not seem to be. I would like to put an electric starter on the unit, but the bolt holes do not seem to match any Johnson starter. I have been told that this has been done; however, I cannot locate anyone that has done it. I cannot find any literature/manual on the motor. If someone out there could help me I would welcome the response. Thanks!

Hi does it have a model number on it?
Can you post a photo?
If theres bolt holes there, there should be some way to do it even if you need to drill bolt holes into a starter bracket.

I think the enforcer is the same as the 55 "commercial model" (which is different than the lower profile standard 55) I have four of them and I put starters on all of them. year/model would be helpful ,, photos would be better

Let me answer as many as I can. Yes, the flywheel has a ring gear. The model # is J55APRLSTR. This is my first post, so I will try to post pictures. The year model is 2002 (parts for the military version are listed in 2003, but lists no electric starter). There is a threaded hole toward the rear of the carbs with a kind of ear, but not what I would expect to mount a starter. I cannot find any pics of the "commercial" 55HP--any ideas? Looks like the location for starter mounting has been used for another job.

J55APRLSTR is an '03. J55APRLSNF is an '02.

Strange no accomodation for starter ...?

Whats that screw in fitting for a pipe doing? Wheres that pipe go too?
If you unscrewed that you should be fine mounting wise.
Is there a third hole below that one that is visible and unused?

I believe that if the motor got dunked you could start it but don't ask me how. Under water and electric starters don't work.

I found a picture with a starter mounted; however, I am not sure how it bolts on or what starter to look for. Thanks for all help.

That may be the commercial model with the starter added.-----The military model had special features so that when submerged there would be no panic in getting it started again.---Seems they used starter lugs for access to crankcase pressures to achieve this ???

I suppose that would be to purge out any water in the upper crankcase? I suppose there must be a lower one too?
That would have to be manually operated wouldnt it? As you couldnt have that on the whole time...
So if he removes that hose and bolts in where that pipe is he could be good for it?

Yes--both of you are correrct--finally talked to someone who had done this---the drain for the cylinders are the two verticle bolt holes for the starter. After looking, the starter should line right up. Know this will come up again--just have to look through all those hoses to see the obvious. Thanks again for everyone's input----------

Reviving old thread - I have the 2004 model (J55APRLSR)

I see that I would need to remove the dewatering system to make room for electric start. Can anybody point me in the direction for what parts (or kit) I need to buy to add electric start/battery charging?

Thanks in advance!
