Hi guys,
I figured my Alpha one Gen 2 upper unit need to replace its oil seal.
I already pulled out my drive and separated Upper unit and Lower unit.
So far so good.

Looks like I need to get a spanner wrench to loos the drive retainer lug nut.
I ordered the wrench and should be able to get it soon.
This is my first time to open up Upper unit.

I have some questions here:

Can I just put upper unit laying on floor and use spanner wrench to loose the nut? Or I need special work bench?

Besides of this retainer lug nut, is there any special tool I need for taking out the bottom oil seal?
Do I need to remove bearing racer before removing oil seal?

Thanks a lot!

Fun times. :)

On the floor is fine (That's also where I tighten them up.)

No. A seal driver would be useful, but if you don't have one, a socket of just the right size will work just as well. But you will need a torque wrench that goes up to 200ft-lb to tighten the drive cover nut.

No. (BTW. There's 2 seals there. The new seal will be a single, double lip seal to replace it.)
Thanks a lot!

Thank you so much for the reply.
200ft-lb for drive cover nut? Is this the one to use spanner wrench?
If this is the torque spec for the spanner wrench, then I only got standard torque wrench. Not sure how that will work out on spanner wrench.

Other wise if 200tf-lb goes to the top 4 nuts, that seems a bit extreme to me.
Thanks again!

Yes. In the manual is a calculation table to find the torque setting based on the length of your particular torque wrench. You MUST get that torque correct.
If this is the torque spec for the spanner wrench, then I only got standard torque wrench to put on extension on the spanner wrench, how much torque should I adjust??
Use the table in the manual

The top cover screws are torqued to 20ft-lb. You'd never get them to 200ft-lb without pulling the threads out of the drive housing!

Do not attempt this job without the factory workshop manual open and next to you....

Oh, thanks for clarification. Seems not too difficult to me to open the Upper unit.

But....... I don't have manual or torque table.
Anywhere I can find this information? Does Mercury dealer shop sell the manual?

I used my finger to check around the seal. Yes, it is one single double lip seal, but looks like it is stuck inside the bottom groove, and there is nothing between this seal and the drive or wheel bearing cup. The manual says use proper tool to punch it off from bottom of Upper unit.

According to the manual:
IMPORTANT: Removal of the driven gear bearing cup is only necessary for
replacement of the cup or drive shaft housing, installing new oil seals and/or the
changing of the shims below the cup for adjusting the driven gear location.
says it is necessary to remove bearing cup when installing new oi seals. I am little confused.
