I've restored a 1966 johnson 6hp and had the problem of it only running on one cylinder until after a while the second cylinder kicks in (I'm talking about 30 mins of wot running). This was before I changed any magneto components. I thought it would be somthing in the boot before so I replaced the wire in the boot with some copper wire and it ran on two cylinders. After that I thought I'd change the whole magneto so I got all new genuine omc components for it. I've replaced the coils, points, condensors and wires and boot plugs. The first time I put it together it ran great on both cylinders and then I took it apart to chnage somthing and after putting it back together around 30 times by now it won't run on two. It has intermittent spark and only will ever run on one. I think it's the position of the coils but I've set them perfectly in line with the machined area and have changed them to almost all.positions and in a position that isn't in line with the machine part the top cylinder will spark but then the bottom won't. Im very confused and have been at this magneto for weeks. Could it be that these new coils have too much resistance for the magnetic force in the flywheel. I've gotten the coils to as close to the magnet by going over the machined parts and it definitely makes a stronger spark but it's still inconsistent. Anyone have any ideas?
