I have a 2006 Four Winns 224 deckboat with only 220 hours on it. I've owned this boat since new back in 2006 with no issues......... until now. The engine is a 5.7 GXI-G in which the fuel pump failed due to them painting the inner assembly. This paint has softened and flaked due to ethanol fuel as you can see below. You may or may not know about this but, there are several other people with the same problem. It's extremely hard for me to wrap my head around a company this huge to distribute these pump assemblies doomed for failure. Does anyone know if VP stopped this process on the interior of these assemblies? If so, is there a VP bulletin on this? I would sincerely appreciate your input. Thanks, Ray

Don't know about VP but Merc put out a bulletin in 2009. The inside of the housings continue to be anodized but the coating does not flake off anymore

This is a good read

You can clean and rebuild yourself, I did mine in the off season or you can buy an aftermarket for a couple hundred bucks. Just don't buy an OEM one because of the price. I agree, someone should have forseen the paint problems ahead of time and that it should have never been approved for acceptance.

No way will I spend around a $1000.00 for a repeat! I have no doubt someone foreseen this. The worst thing is, I haven't seen an official correction anywhere that VP has changed their process. That tells me, they simply don't care....Period. Thanks for your input. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

Merc sent me an email
The inside of the gen 3 cool fuel modules were always coated and still are today. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet. In about 2015 we came out with a new top cap which is anodized and is resistant to today's fuel additives.
Its not paint its anodize

Does anybody have an idea what should be the temperature of the pump when running? Somewhere I heard that the fuel is cooling the pumps and if the pump is struggling the temperature will rise, meaning the pumps will get hot. Is that true or not necessarily? And if it's true, what would be too hot? My own example - the fuel in the tank would be ~70f and pumps under load some 110...115f (pretty much everything that is in the engine compartment has the same temp when running, somewhere around 100...110f)

That's great.... Good to hear that they're doing the right thing. ๐Ÿ‘
So, my understanding is that a 2016 VP 300C 5.3 has a Carter pump that is anodized and not painted and so there wont be any flaking blocking screens and injectors?
