Howdy all, I recently purchased a restored 1954 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 hp and I love the motor. I was originally worried about the shaft being long enough to get 'bite' in the water and I am indeed having some issues. I've been trying to figure out a way to use a jack plate or even cut the transom but I'm not sure if I should just sell the engine.

Here are the numbers:
Engine shaft length 15"
Boat transom height 20"

Since it's a tiller I don't think I can drop it with a plate because the tiller would impact the back of the boat. I did consider that the tiller will angle but that seems like it would put the operator in a weird position with the motor being really far back and operating the tiller at an angle? I don't really care what it looks like as long as it runs. Thoughts?

Correct way to deal with it would be install a 5" extension kit in the motor. Now begins the hunt to find one.

Yea a jack plate would also give you at least 5” of set back as well. That would be a very uncomfortable set up.
