I recently purchased a “everything works perfectly” 1989 Starcraft Islander 22 foot. Needless to say, everything doesn’t work perfect. The first time putting into the water I could hear water coming in. The shift cable bellow was broken. This has been replaced along with all the other bellows, shift cable and gimbal bearing. Before putting back into the water I put a garden hose into the bilge and added water. After putting about 6 inches of water in water began coming out of the exhaust ports of the lower unit. Am I to assume the engine has to come out now? Thank you. Jeff.

To be honest. It’s not anything conclusive, what you’ve posted in the video. Water coils run out here for many reasons. Depends on when it was ran, angle of the boat on trailer…water coming from manifolds etc.

It runs out of the exhaust ports as long as you lave the water at a certain level in the bilge. As soon as I pull the plug and drain the bilge the water stops coming out of the exhaust ports. I’ve read there’s a seal where the exhaust manifold tubes come together and go through the transom.

Most likely your transom is soft. Pull the drive, pull the motor, check everything out

You will most likely need bellows and a gimbal bearing and probably u-joints and an input shaft seal

You may find the flappers dropped and the pin wore thru the y-pipe.

Once the motor is out, you may find lots of issues

I figured I’d be pulling the engine. The bellows, shift cable and gimbal bearing just got changed and the transom feels and sounds solid. Do you the name of the seal the exhaust goes through? Also, is Bondo still around here?

I had a feeling thi
Sounds like the y-pipe seal isn't (sealing). Or the y-pipe is corroded through. Or.... The pin has broken from one of the exhaust shutters and worn a hole in the y-pipe. (ask me how I know about THAT one!)

Oh yes...

I had a feeling this was the issue. I bought this from a man in his eighties without hearing it run because the price was right and I knew someone that old “would be honest”, lol. I got taken for a ride by an elderly dude lmao. Live and learn.

Here’s a pic of the one I just bought that needs work. I took a gamble and gave $4,000.00. It came with riggers, Garmin GPS, new canvas, planer boards and 4 poles. I figured at that price there were issues. But I was hoping not.

Henderson Harbor got screwed on Salmon this year. Almost nothing in the trench. Light stocking 3 years ago. The Guides weren’t happy. I have a 22 foot Thompson for Salmon but bought this one for walleye. Are you near the Coast? So much great seafood in Maine.

The Walleye are plentiful this year out by the Galloos. Cold water Walleye and Perch are the best eating. Are you able to harvest any seafood yourself?
