My boat has a rotten transom. My motor was completely rebuilt in 2018 and runs great. What should I do about this engine? Is it sellable? Use it for parts? Any advise will be appreciated.

Welcome aboard

up to you what you want to do. most people on this site would rebuild the transom, stringers, etc.

if you want to sell it, then list on Ebay, CL or your local facetube market place

if you want to restore your boat, start a thread in the restoration forum. plenty of info in the 4th sticky in the forum on rebuilding. suggest reading links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b

Absolutely its sellable unless. It may be less saleable if it is a 3.7 or inline six or really ancient. If in good shape try CL list complete drivetrain but you have to take the boat ... or list it higher if they leave what they dont want....

Thank you for the advice. I did view Youtubes on repairing the transom and stringers. I love my little boat but I do not have the skills to do this. I had an estimate done and it was way more money then I can afford. Insurance would not pay because damaged was deemed wear and tear. I am just trying to get any and all advice as to what to do.

only youtube video worth a salt is friscoboaters threads. (link 14 I mentioned)

transom, stringers, deck, etc. will cost you about $3k if you do it yourself

yes, rot is normal wear and tear on a boat. boats are designed to last 15 years before needing a complete overhaul. being your motor is 175hp, that would put your boat about 1988 or 35 years old. well past its useful design or service life.

however if you want to restore it yourself. we can help with advise. start a thread in the restoration forum and read the links there I mentioned.

Look on eBay to see what people are asking for drives, transom mounts and engines. Being Mercruiser there’s for sure a market for them. Would be a shame to junk the boat though. The reality is and why I fixed mine is anything decent that does not need those repairs; most likely will cost more than the repairs in today’s market. Good used boats are going for crazy prices now. One way to look at it….
Price out the repairs…can you buy a boat that definitely does NOT need the same repairs for that same money? If not, repairing does make sense….

Is that a sea ray 170? I had a 1991 for many years. Held up very well. As the kids got bigger it got smaller, bought a sea ray 200 sport about six years ago , nicer size

Another option is wait until early spring and find a boat you like with an engine that wasn't winterized properly (and now the engine block is cracked, and worthless)... Transplant your good engine into it and you're on a winner...
