I noticed that my alternator is getting really hot while running. My battery and everything seems fine so looking at getting a new alternator, but while I was checking the engine over I noticed as soon as I connect the battery the fuel pump is on the whole time and it doesn't matter if the key is on or off. Could the problem with the alternator getting hot cause another issue that would create problems with the fuel pump?

The ALT is passing voltage on the green wire and has an issue. It should pass voltage only when running thru the diode (item 23)

I have a Volvo 4.3GL-D not sure what year it is but it is the original engine in my 2004 Seaswirl Bowrider. As soon as I connect the battery the fuel pump turns on even if the key is in the off position. I thought it might be the fuel pump relay but when I connect the battery you can hear the relay click so I think the relay is working but its just getting power for some reason. Any ideas what could be happening?

How hot is the alternator getting ? I’d think normal windings would run at around 70 degrees c or so. Rough idea would be if you can touch it for more than a few seconds..it’s less than 70 degrees c.

Not sure as I don't have a temp gun but you can't touch it for more than a second.

Hi mate I'm currently having trouble with my 4.3gld and need to replace the diode item 23 on the green wire. Do you have any details on what the diode is. Just trying to buy a replacement.

Need to keep this on your thread
Just search for 1 or 2 amp diode. The VP part cost about $25 and finding them online or at local electronics parts house is about 50 cents
