1998 Evinrude 35hp water temp issues!

Hi, new to boating and just recently got a boat with a 1998 evinrude 35hp 3 cyl. The day we got it we took it out for a little test drive for 20 mins and it went fine no issues. Then took it out again and started up fine out on the water then within 5 mins the water temp light came on and went into SLOW mode! Then when we turned off the engine and it wouldn’t start. Then replaced thermostat and greased the prop shaft, no need for water pump because water coming out tell tale? spark plugs are all good, carbs look good. Started it up and it fired straight back up let it idle for 30 mins with hose and no water temp light issue. Took it out again and same water temp issue happened again out on the water. Again turn off engine and it doesn’t come back on. Ordered a new impeller so hopefully that will help just wondering if their could be any more possibilities or check overs we can do with this water pump issue? Thinking could be a timing sensor issue maybe, does anyone have an advice on how to test them? thank you any advice kindly appreciated asap!!!

Also, can someone tell me if my engine has a poppet? if so where is it can’t find it for the life of me and can’t find any info on it anywhere?

Model # of your motor ?-------Temperature light ?-----Is the " mickey mouse " oil mixer still in service ?-----Or running at 50:1 mix ?-----Do a compression test first !

Which is the exact Model for that 1988 motor. That's a 33 year oldie used in fresh or salt water? If it's not a water pump, t-stat related issue could be a faulty Temp Sensor issue assuming all water passages are clean and cooling the motor right when high throttle is in demand...

Hi, thanks heaps for the response, model is e35qleca and lived it’s lifetime in saltwater. I also meant to say temperature sensor not timing sensor sorry! so do you believe that being faulty could have something to do with these issues occurring? do you know how to test it to find out if it’s faulty? thank you again!

Put a impeller and t-stat assy in it.

Run a wot test with new impeller and T-stat installed. report if all went well, if still with same issue a matter to check/troubleshoot the Temp Sensor located on the head..

Hi, thank you for all your help very much appreciated! New impeller should be coming in today and will fit it on and test it and get back to you! We got the temp sensor out is there a way to check it with multimeter?

Ah yes thank you! I was trying to look into doing a desalt of the engine, didn’t know you only needed vinegar and dish soap though, thanks so much for the helpful video!!!

You're Welcome,
To troubleshoot the Temp Sensor generally needs to be Ohm tested cold and warm while being slow heated in hydraulic oil, will need the factory tech specs to test if doing its homework right or not. It's the same procedure as when troubleshooting t-stats, the only difference is one is heated with water the later with hydraulic oil.

Vinegar nor Salt Away won't do a thing with a motor run for such long years in salt water, doesn't matter if was conveniently flushed for half an hour when returning to Terra Firme. Will need a commercial discaler to remove all the salt build ups, crusts on the entire powerhead's cooling system. Seems the Temp Sensor for your model motor is NLA...
