Is it acceptable to use ordinary zinc plated bolts on a gimbal assembly? I can't find stainless bolts in the correct size locally.

What is an engine anode for?
What material is it made out ?
What happens to it over time?

You don’t only need Stainless, but 316 stainless

So im converting this old gimbal to the square/spline upper swivel shaft and i need the 2 bolts that pinch the square on the shaft at the top of the ring. The used gimbal ring did not come with hardware.

This is an aluminum V hull running fresh water only that lives on the trailer in my yard.

They are just standard S/S screws, nothing special. You could also order them from Merc... (parts list below #28, #29x2, #30)

I ended up getting the 316 stainless from bolt depot. They're quite a bit cheaper that way than buying oem.

316L I hope. 316, 316L, 316N, 316F... all different. Only 316L is 'marine' grade.

I don't believe they are 316L. This boat is probably never going to see salt though.

Stainless bolts at home depot are 18-8

18-8 doesn't have the molybdenum (and hence corrosion resistance) that 316L has. 18-8 is more akin to 304.

Chris..........
Ayuh,..... The box store bolts seem to be awfully soft, not strong at all,.....

I could baffle you with all sorts of metallurgical differences between the materials but the only thing that comes into play in this application is corrosion resistance.

The popular 304, 303 and 18/8 grades will “stain” over time. If you don’t care you you have the dreaded, brown stain disease, it doesn’t matter which stainless you use.

Just don’t use zinc plated hardware.

Why do you think an elementary breakdown of any alloy would baffle everybody? It wouldn't baffle me. If you want something to be baffled about, explain this.... A black hole's gravity is so powerful that even light can't escape (hence the name 'black hole'), but the gravitationally equation relies on mass and as photons are massless particles gravity has no effect on them. How is it that light can't escape?

It is. The chart is only for hardened and loadings, not the metalurgy and corrosion properties.
but it puts 18-8 and 316 in the same category. Are these bolts gonna be too soft for this application? I'm used to working on land vehicles where i rarely use anything weaker than a grade 5 or 8.8
The gimbal ring clamp screws are only torqued to 75 newton metres. Your bolts will be plenty strong enough for that...

(And this is why are prefer using OEM. No messing around with will it do the same job)

Ayuh,..... SSteel nuts, 'n bolts like to gall their threads, so I swab 'em with Perfect Seal, before I run the nuts on,.....
Helps 'em run on smoother, snug up good, 'n come off nicely later, if necessary,....

I use Aqua-lube. Does the same thing.

Generic 316 hardware is about 35-40ksi

OEM bolts are about 70ksi

Thats a pretty big difference in strength. I guess the $30 oem bolts are money well spent for safety.
