Is there an indent ring or is there a pin holding the shaft in place? My thoughts are using a 5lb sledge hammer head as a slide hammer against a pair of vise grips to tap it out. I've used Gibbs penetration oil and soaked it overnight.

where you able to drop the gc a bit & flip it over and drain the Gibbs down the shaft to soak the splines ...??

When I pulled the lower unit there was no key way to lock the impeller in place and the shaft came out of the lower unit. I bought this motor for $50 and the young man that I got it from had said that it wasn't pump water. So no key way was put back in the impeller shaft when whoever reinstall the impeller.

Nothing is holding it there but RUST------303191 is the 0-ring that keeps water out of the spline.------Often left out by a novice.---Often they forget to grease the spline on assembly.-----Then you get rust / corrosion build up in the crankshaft spline and the shaft is jammed.------Make up some kind of adapter to clamp on the driveshaft and pull it out with a slide hammer..-----$ 50 is a bargain for that motor.------Compression test must be done before spending any beer tokens.-----It tells me that this motor has not had proper service work done over the years.

As motors get older and older there will be more of these stuck driveshafts in my opinion.-----Folks rarely take them in for authorized service like they did 40 / 50 years ago.-----Cost of labor scares most folks.----Electronic ignition means that motors usually start and there is no reason to visit the shop / do any maintenance.

The young man said that he had it running and that's when he noticed that it wasn't pumping water and shut it down in a test tank. I replaced the tiller handle assembly and found that a 1986 Johnson tiller handle worked for a perfect fit. So using a 5lb sledge hammer head as a slide hammer, will work ok?

Any discoloring of paint on the cylinder head ?-----I suggest a compression test on any motor that is new to you, if only for future reference..----Avoids you spending money on a dud as is often done.----Seen it many times.----Just because a motor " runs " does not mean it is in good condition !!

I will run a compression test, there is no discoloring at or around the surface of the head.

great news... brush it off grease the splines only and if compression is ok and nothing serious you have a nice motor. do carb and gearcase service if ignition is OK

I got the shaft out and was trying to assemble back together and was having trouble with the shift lever lining up. As I was pulling the bottom unit off again the impeller woodruff key got destroyed, as it was and is made of a rubber compound. My question is? Can I make one out of brass or lead, wood, of some soft material as to not having to buy a hole new kit? The woodruff key is a half moon shaped with the key way down the center. I could use a hard plastic cutting board material and shape one out of that type of material. Any suggestions?

The original stainless pin is available at $2.73 or make one.----Newer drive keys were a plastic material.-----Not sure what lower unit is installed on your motor at this time.----Lower unit off a 1990 might fit.
