Just picked up a nice 1993 Johnson 4 Deluxe… low hours, still has factory paint on the plugs. The lower unit requires OMC Premium Blend Lubricant ( not Hi Vis ).
Is there a known suitable replacement for this in today’s market ? Thanks for any wisdom.

Premium Blend is still available. Why not use what it calls for?

Not easily accessible here in Ontario… shipping from US costs as much as the product. Hoping there is a wider available substitute. Cheers

Well-----
" Premium Blend "-----Was used for electric shift motors.-----Not needed for a little 4 HP------Wallmart has outboard gear oil that is just fine for a 4 HP.----Or in Canada you get it at Canadian Tire stores.

Thanks for the input… yes I might go to Canadian Tire for the regular lube… it makes sense since the motor is not electric shift… it’s just the Service Manual for the 4 Deluxe says it should be Premium , whereas the regular 4, 6 and 8 can use Hi Vis… but not the 4 Deluxe…. It just doesn’t say why.

Model # of this motor ?-----Some of these 4 HP models use a gear housing that was first used on the 1968 model 1-1/2 HP .----Updated with some needle bearings.----Keep water out and use a good oil.

That gearcase is the same as used on the 8 HP model.-----Outboard gear oil from Canadian Tire works just fine.-----Just keep water out of that gearcase.-----The propshaft bearing carrier has been NLA for many years and is the first part to break with pressure build up from freezing !

Thanks, great advice…. given its so light east to store indoors. I will watch the color of the lube very carefully. Cheers
