Hello, all. I've recently inherited the family boat. It's a 1979 Imperial t168 tri-hull with a Johnson Stinger 75 short shaft. I've been lurking and researching for quite some time until now, and I'm hoping for some guidance and getting it water-ready. It's unfortunately sat in storage since 1998, though it was indoors and covered, with sta-bil pumped through it before being parked.

I'm prepared to have a credible local shop go through it, as I'm told an outboard like this sitting so long will need some work done. What exactly can I expect as to just getting it running, and would it harm anything if I test fired it first?

I'd love to go through and have them put in Wiseco pistons, rebuild and jet the carbs, etc. I read where some people mill the head 0.050. Is there anything further performance-wise I could do to make it scream?

Max/cruising RPM - I've read 5,500 and I've read 7,000 rpm. I do not want to assume on this part, at all. What is the best / safest max RPM for these? I'll be installing an OMC tach.

Finally, I'd love a recommendation on which prop to use. I don't care so much about getting out of the hole as much as I do with top speed. I don't want to spend a mile getting up on the plane, either. I've no idea which prop is currently on it, other than it's from at least 1995 and it's white. I seem to remember getting around 33-35 knots back then. Surely I could see 50+ with the right upgrades and prop, right?

Thanks in advance! I'm really looking forward to this project.

The short shaft motors used a smaller ( weaker ) lower unit I believe.-----Post a picture or post numbers found on the prop.------If it was stored with fuel in the carburetors you might need to clean them.-----Or install a new water pump impeller.-----Change the gear oil and go boating.

I will grab pictures for sure when I get it out of storage. Hoping it's not more than a week or two away.
