How Can I get lower case off without reverse gear on my 1978 115 HP evinrude

G'day sea faring champions ,could anyone tell me if I can get the lower case off my Evinrude 115 HP without it going into reverse ,it will go into neutral but won't click into reverse no matter what I try and all the forum and YouTube instructions say to put the gear into reverse before removing the lower case to get at the clutch ,but it won't go into reverse so how do I get the lower case off with no reverse gear?

You and many others are mistaken.----It does NOT need to be in reverse to come off.----Disconnect shift rod.-----Then remove the bolts.----Remove trim tab and hidden bolt there.-----The lower unit will now slide off.----Elegantly simple in my opinion.-----Ignore those YEW-TUBERS !!

Thanks heaps man ,you are a total legend ,tinkered with it last night and it actually locked into reverse ,I,ll fire her up tomorrow and see if she,ll run in reverse or it's just the gear locking in with no reverse prop action ,probably have to put in a new dog clutch.

Tinkered with linkages and reverse control lever on the engine ,loosened the bolt that the lift arm pivots on to lift the gear lever into reverse .

Got battery on charge ,see if she,ll go in reverse this Arvo.

Model # of your motor ??---I thought the shift rod moves down for reverse on this 1978 motor.----Have you checked shift rod height on this motor ?
