If you have the old shaft, you can cut the end off to use as a guide.

or find a socket the same size as the shaft, push in a bit to hold the lip on the seal open and guide the shaft in.

Unfortunately I already threw out the old cable. So is the white plastic ring a split ring that can be expanded? Or is it just a matter of perfectly lining it up?

Ayuh,.... The 1st thing to do is Grease the shaft, 'n inside of the tube,.....

Otherwise, you'll be doin' this again in a year or two,....

I’ll grease it, thank you! Any other tips for getting it through that white plastic ring?

Ayuh,..... Never dealt with one, with an o-ring like that,.....
Do know that the most common failure is binding/ corrosion, from a lack of grease though,......

I might try bevelin' the edge of the cable end slightly, to help spread the ring out to where it's gotta be,.....

shoving a socket in the hole that is the same size of the shaft to hold the lip on the seal open while you push the shaft thru as stated in post #2

Thank you Scott, I have been trying that for over an hour, maybe I don’t have a socket that is right. I found one the same size as the end of the cable, and tried pushing it in from the other side, but it would not go through from that end either.

Well, I finally got it to go through. I lightly tapped the cable clamp part (metal) with a hammer and it popped through. Thank you everyone!
